The Completed Art of Ewald Rentz

Ewald Rentz toiled as a lumberjack, prospector, musician and barber before beginning to make folk art at the age of 65. Living in the small northern Ontario community of Beardmore Ontario, Rentz recognized familiar forms in the roots and branches of the trees around him. He took these natural objects home to “complete” and thus create the animals and figures he imagined.

Ewald Rentz continued to produce sculpture of amazing grace, humour and vitality until his death at the age of 87.


This 30 minute DV documentary is an exploration of the life and work of Ewald Rentz. It features interviews with his patrons, family, and friends, as well as close examination of numerous pieces of work.

Also included on the DVD is a slide show of images of Ewald, his artwork, and press clippings. These images are viewed by using the fast forward or play buttons on your DVD remote.

DIRECTOR: Cassandra Ross is a Queen's University Film Studies grad and this is her first documentary. She shot this film on her own miniDV camera over the course of five years with the help of amazing folk art collectors and Rentz fans. The labour of love was completely worth it! PRODUCER: Phillip Ross is a highly regarded folk art collector and dealer who has been in the antiques business for over 25 years. Phillip is Cassandra's dad and was eager to join her on this film making adventure. He is currently running his shop Shadfly Antiques, and contributing to the FolkArtCanada website, which documents and celebrates Canadian folk art.
